Miss You Daddy!

While the day is almost over, it marks the tenth anniversary of my father’s death — Richard Leland Gibson.  For those of you that don’t know, my blog is named in his honor — gibbysgirl.  My boat, which hasn’t seen water in almost five years, is also named after him.  My father was in the Army and all his soldiers called him “Gibby.”  That makes me Gibby’s Girl.  I can’t belive that so much time has gone by since last I talked with him.  He and my husband are the two most amazing men I have ever met.  I am sad that they never got the chance to meet.  Although my father was by no means perfect, he was the best father a daughter could ever have.  He loved his family immeasurably and would have done anything for us.  Were it within his power, I know that he would be here today.  Alas, cancer took him on June 2, 1998 and my life has never been the same.  I would say that his death has been my defining moment.  And while losing my father was incredibly painful (I was a Daddy’s girl), I cannot fathom my life without my mother.  As they say, there’s just something about having your Momma in your life — I think you’re still considered a kid.

So here’s to my Father and all the other individuals that are apart of the DDC (Dead Dad’s Club).   It’s a lousy group to belong to, but sooner or later everyone is a member.

One-Two-Three-Four. Tell me that you love me more. . . .

Do you know Feist? I LOVE Feist! They are a groovey band whose hit song -1,2,3,4-is now the Ebay theme song. Feist has been around for a while, but like most things, I am always the last to know. Take Ebay for instance. Just this week I discovered the joys of winning cool stuff all while in the comfort of my jammies. Chuck is a little concerned about my enthusiasm as I am using his PayPal account at the moment.  But, I think after a full week of binging and purchasing some amazing jewelry lots (like the auction lingo?), I may have calmed down a bit. I love thrift shopping, and with ebay, it’s as if I have thousands of flea markets at my grubby little finger tips.  I can see how people can become addicted.  I also get a little peeved when people outbid me.  I had to keep my attitude in check.   Can I really afford $350 for a Magnolia Pearl bag?  Oh my gosh that’s such a good deal — especially considering they can go as high as $600 — but there is that pesky student loan that comes due every month.  Sigh.  Needless to say I had to wave goodbye to the amazing bag (can you hear Taps playing in the background?).

Despite my venture into Ebay, I managed to pick up some great finds in my own backyard.  I told everyone last Sunday about the cool vintage linens I purchased for a song.  Here are some pictures that Chucklebutt took for me.

The embroidery on these pieces is precious.  I love the blue bird.

These are the tableclothes I picked up.  Mom says they remind her of Bopka’s linens in the 1950’s.

Can there be anything better than vintage, crocheted doilies?  Check out that pink flower!

This week at work I hosted a “Butterbean Auction.”  I give my residents 40 beans to bid on each other’s junk.  We have a blast and most things are just that — junk.  This time, however, one of my residents was getting rid of a whole bunch of earrings that a deceased friend had left her.  I thought I had hit the mother load.  I offered to pay her for them but being the kind hearted woman that she is, she asked that the money be put back in the activity fund.  Win-win for everyone.  Check it out!

It’s a terrific lot of rhinestones and crystals.  I gave a pair to my boss who loves sparkly things and I think I’ll use the rest in my artwork.  I had Chuck take a few more pictures of where I store my stuff.  I completely swiped the idea from Andrea at Velvet Strawberries.  The case comes from Michael’s and it’s a great way to display your treasures.

I am hopelessly addicted to mini posies!  Aren’t those colors delicious?

This picture just makes me happy.

I hope that everyone has a nice weekend.  Summer camp starts next week, so I’ll be working with one generation in the morning and their great-grandkids in the afternoon.  I love my work and feel so fortunate!

Finally, check out this awesome parody of the Back Street Boys’ “I Want It That A Way.”
Only from the genius that is Weird Al!   Peace and Hugs!
